Music

Music is the strongest form of magic. Music is an extremely important subject for all children to learn and can lead to better brain development, increases in human connection and even stress relief. Various studies have found that engagement with music can lead to an improvement in brain development. It has been found that there is better neural processing in students who played a musical instrument when they were compared with students who simply listened to music. So, our college has introduced Music Instrumental as an optional subject in BA stream.

As it is a practical subject, our college has a music lab for the training and practice of students. We provide a nurturing environment for students to participate in different local as well as state level performances. Highly qualified staff having doctorate degree has been appointed by Guru Nanak Dev Uinversity, Amritsar for providing students with the very best in technical training and instruct students in performance and music theory. Our teachers are well versed in different genres of music i.e, vocal as well as instrumental. They lead various performance ensembles at the college such as assembly and club performances, annual function and various celebrations. They also coach the students for performing in youth festival organized by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

The aim of having a music lab in college is to develop a love for music in children, increase their understanding of music and help them to identify their area of interest and in turn shape their abilities and character. The lab has all kinds of instruments like tabla , sitar, tanpura and harmonium etc. The lab also has a music library which contains wide range of music related books. Teachers encourage active engagement with learning by introducing more ‘hands on’ exploration or making processes into music lessons. This helps students’ engagement with the subject and turn abstract ideas into more memorable experiences and knowledge. The music lab allows students to focus on and perfect techniques and ideas that they are working on or may be struggling with. It further allows them to receive real-time feedback from their practices. Students evaluate and enhance their own musical performances and also create and develop new musical ideas. They get exposed to music and musical performances that they may not have access to outside of such an environment.

Hence, the purpose of having Music lab is to provide the students with an understanding of the fundamentals of music at the same time strengthening their bond with one of the finest forms of art. Exploring the various dimensions of music, whether performing a vocal solo, rehearsing to tune the strings or creating compositions is the main aim of the music lab of our college.
